CHAPTER X. Shaking

She took her off the table as she spoke, and shook her backwards and forwards with all her might.

The Red Queen made no resistance whatever; only her face grew very small, and her eyes got large and green: and still, as Alice went on shaking her, she kept on growing shorter—and fatter—and softer—and rounder—and—

—and it really was a kitten, after all.

Чёрная Королева (Red Queen)

Чёрный Рыцарь (Red Knight)

**A** boat beneath a sunny sky,
     **L**ingering onward dreamily
     **I**n an evening of July—

     **C**hildren three that nestle near,
     **E**ager eye and willing ear,
**P**leased a simple tale to hear—

**L**ong has paled that sunny sky:
     **E**choes fade and memories die.
     **A**utumn frosts have slain July.

     **S**till she haunts me, phantomwise,
     **A**lice moving under skies
     **N**ever seen by waking eyes.

**C**hildren yet, the tale to hear,
     **E**ager eye and willing ear,
     **L**ovingly shall nestle near.

     **I**n a Wonderland they lie,
**D**reaming as the days go by,
     **D**reaming as the summers die:

     **E**ver drifting down the stream—
     **L**ingering in the golden gleam—
**L**ife, what is it but a dream?

            THE END

1871 [19]
(1864[12]; 1860[8])
(The title page of the first edition erroneously gives “1872”[20] as the date of publication.)

At least four complete volumes and around seven pages of text are missing from Dodgson’s 13 diaries. The loss of the volumes remains unexplained; the pages have been removed by an unknown hand. Most scholars assume that the diary material was removed by family members in the interests of preserving the family name, but this has not been proven. Except for one page, material is missing from his diaries for the period between 1853[1] and 1863[11] (when Dodgson was 21–31 years old).

the unexplained “break” with the family in June 1863[11]

15 сентября 1880 [28] года в Вестминстерском аббатстве Алиса вышла замуж за крикетиста Реджинальда Харгривса (13 октября 1852 — 13 февраля 1926), который был учеником доктора Доджсона.

By the time that Dodgson abruptly ceased photography (1880, over 24 years), he had established his own studio on the roof of Tom Quad, created around 3,000 images, and was an amateur master of the medium, though fewer than 1,000 images have survived time and deliberate destruction.

Профессор математики Оксфордского университета (1855—1881).
